Superbad - 2007

by Elizabeth Little - 2007-08-31

The plan: get the booze, go to the party, seduce the women. The problem: They're nerdy, they're 18, and their fake ID says nothing but "McLovin'". Seth, Evan, and Fogell have to individually face an obstacle course of liquor-store robbers, home-ec teachers, menstruating woman, singing crackheads, and (of course) the police in order to get to this party on time. Superbad has excellent acting by the three main characters (who look their age, unlike most Hollywood "teens") and the plot reaches an emotional level when best friends face the coming separation of different universities. But these are the only compliments I can give the film. It's dialogue is realistic: extremely vulgar and profane. The first 20 minutes of crudeness don't encourage you to watch the rest of the film. The sex jokes and slapstick make you cringe rather than laugh. Lewd and only mildly entertaining, Superbad is a wait-for-it-on-DVD and don't watch it with your parents film.
