Out of Sight - 1998

by Catherine Leopold - 2008-06-22

This stylish crime thriller from director Steven Soderbergh stars George Clooney as a bank robber and Jennifer Lopez as the FBI agent he falls for after kidnapping her during his escape from prison. Although the pair share only one conversation in the boot of a car, something between them clicks, and Clooney's Jack Foley is torn between laying low or getting in touch with the woman he believes that, under different circumstances, could've been 'The One'. For her part, Lopez's Karen Sisco finds herself drawn to a man she knows she will have to arrest if she has the opportunity.

Foley and his friend Buddy plan to rob the house of a man they were in prison with, a timid businessman named Richard Ripley. The rumour that Ripley has millions of dollars worth of uncut diamonds stashed somewhere in his mansion is too irresistible to ignore, but another group of dangerous ex-cons led by Maurice Miller (Don Cheadle) is planning to get hold of the diamonds too, helped by Foley's dim-witted but well-meaning associate, Glenn (Steve Zahn). Deals are struck and double crosses abound as the action builds to a tense climax at Ripley's mansion, with every man out for himself and Karen Sisco making her way up the driveway with her pistol drawn...

Out of Sight is an engaging and enjoyable crime movie that has comedic and romance elements too. Clooney's charismatic performance put him well on the road to stardom (at the time he was best known for ER) and Jennifer Lopez proves that, with the right material, she's a capable actress and a commanding screen presence. The plot seems unnecessarily convoluted at times, but it is based on an Elmore Leonard novel, and what's a crime caper without a few twists and turns?
